We were recently featured in an article about Water Valley in the Memphis Commercial Appeal:
In May 2007, Alexe van Beuren, 28, along with her husband, Kagan Coughlin, bought a 10,000-square-foot building in Water Valley, saving the 140-year-old downtown structure from a developer.
“The day we signed the papers for the building, I found out I was pregnant with our first child,” says van Beuren.
For the next three years, Coughlin renovated the space. In May 2010, van Beuren, who helped found the Water Valley Farmers Market, opened The B.T.C. Old-Fashioned Grocery, a neighborhood grocery, in that building.
Van Beuren’s move sparked an avalanche of creativity and entrepreneurship in the small town — particularly among women.
